Astrid Goes

Abroad

Join me as I survive and thrive

(ish).

Wilkommen!

2024 Update:

In the post-travel depressive stage having just returned from three months in Central America.

Currently working on a Law Masters while scraping coins together for the next trip I'm planning to get over the old one finishing.

2023 Update:

No longer a free spirited teenager but rather anxious early twenty something navigating her first nine to five.

September 2021:

Hallo! I'm Astrid attempting the unthinkable for an average English speaker...moving abroad  and actually attempting to immerse myself and learn a new language. Given Brexit and Covid-19, this year has already proven to be even more notoriously difficult than usual, so I invite you to join me on my whims and woes as I anxiously navigate myself around the straight-talking Germans and my own personal challenge of getting a ticket inspector to smile :-)

If you fancy my travel advice (and unlike my legal knowledge, it's free!)

My Goals for the Year (2024)
*for legal purposes, there is no formal commitment on my part to achieve them*

Become competent ish at Spanish

Having now mastered German, it's time to show off my Spanish-or alternatively publish even more embarrassing stories of being lost in translation.

Cross the Pond

Generally my approach to flying is rather like the uneasiness a penguin must feel at a tropical beach party. However I am also conscious that in order to see the curiosities of South America, I have to put my big girl pants on and face my fear of flying. Wish me luck.

Not lose anything

This will be the hardest. I have managed to lose my Oyster card three times in the three months since I've had it.

I also have one more opportunity from work to apply for a discount card before it is refused. And I've only been there since September.

2021 Goals

Become a competent and confident German speaker

In these posts, you will probably find my hidden delights at funny expressions I've learnt-or alternatively embarrassing stories of being lost in translation.

Travel Beyond My Back Garden

I'm usually about as adventurous as a British mum's spice rack, so am excited to announce my plans to season my travel knowledge.

Hidden Gem Destinations

Find a hidden gem-this is incredibly subjective so expect this to consistently change.
